Luigi Lavazza opened his first grocery shop in Turin, Italy in 1895 and began blending coffee from multiple origins — East Africa, Central America, Brazil — into consistent flavor profiles under the Lavazza brand. Before commercial coffee blending was standardized, coffee was sold single-origin with highly variable flavor. Lavazza's blend innovation created brand consistency: the consumer could buy Lavazza and know what they would get. This is the foundational brand proposition of all commodity-to-consumer food brands: removing origin variability through processing, selection, and blending. The Lavazza family (now in its 5th generation of family ownership) has operated the company for 130 years — one of the oldest surviving family-controlled consumer food companies in Europe. The same blending philosophy that Luigi applied in 1895 to dried roasted beans is the rationale behind every private label and branded food product that abstracts commodity variability into consistent branded experience.
