Did you know2024
Loncin, a Chongqing engine-and-motorcycle maker known for inexpensive general-purpose engines, also manufactures engines for BMW Motorrad — it builds the powerplants for some of BMW's smaller motorcycles. So the badge on a premium German motorcycle can sit atop an engine built by a Chinese contract manufacturer better known for budget generator engines. It's the brand-versus-manufacturer divergence this radar keeps finding, now reaching into the most identity-defining part of a motorcycle, the engine itself: the prestige marque designs and specifies, but a Chinese partner builds it. As with displays under Western TV brands (TCL CSOT) and earbuds under AirPods (GoerTek), the premium brand is increasingly a design-and-marketing layer over Asian manufacturing — and a rider revving a German motorcycle may be revving a Chongqing-built engine.

Loncin is also part of the vast Chinese small-engine industry that grew up cloning and iterating on the Honda GX general-purpose engine. Chongqing's engine makers — Loncin, Zongshen, Lifan and others — collectively supply an enormous share of the world's cheap general-purpose engines: the ones in budget generators, pumps, pressure washers and equipment. So beneath the Honda GX (the most-copied small engine on Earth) sits a concentrated Chinese manufacturing base that actually builds most of the world's affordable power equipment. The small engine, like so much else in this radar, is a Chinese-manufacturing concentration wearing many different brand names — and Loncin straddles both ends of it at once: the budget-clone generator engine and, via BMW, the premium European motorcycle, the same factories serving the cheapest and the most prestigious customers in the same product family.
