LDC's Rotterdam biodiesel plant converts the same rapeseed oil LDC trades as a food ingredient into renewable diesel -- competing with the food industry for feedstock, or processing the non-food-grade fractions. Louis Dreyfus was founded in 1851 in Alsace, France (then German territory) by Leopold Louis-Dreyfus, who began trading grain in the Rhine basin. The company grew into one of the world's largest commodity trading houses over 170 years, remaining privately held by the Louis-Dreyfus family (headquarters moved to Amsterdam). LDC is one of the four 'ABCD' global grain traders -- Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM), Bunge, Cargill, and Dreyfus -- that together control the majority of the world's grain export infrastructure, including port terminals, shipping capacity, inland storage, and trading relationships. Louis Dreyfus controls rapeseed supply chains from Canadian prairies through European ports -- the same rapeseed that LDC originates and trades also provides the feedstock for LDC's Rotterdam biodiesel plant. A 170-year-old Alsatian grain trading family built one of Europe's largest biodiesel plants to vertically integrate from rapeseed origin to renewable fuel, within the same commodity trading supply chain.
