Meihua Holdings was founded in 2002 by Wang Sanpao in Langfang, Hebei Province and grew aggressively using microbial fermentation technology licensed from Japanese companies (the same fermentation platform underlying Ajinomoto's global amino acid dominance). Meihua built the world's largest single L-lysine HCl facility at 300,000 MT/yr -- more than the entire global production capacity of 2000. The company's growth was enabled by the same factors as other Chinese fermentation giants: cheap corn from China's northeastern grain belt, cheap electricity from coal power, and government support for 'strategic' amino acid industries. Western and Japanese companies (Evonik, CJ Bio, ADM, Ajinomoto) that had dominated global lysine supply since the 1990s found their market share eroded by Chinese overcapacity. The US investigated and imposed antidumping duties on Chinese lysine multiple times since 2010, but Chinese production continued expanding. Meihua is essentially the scale-up of the same industrial policy that allowed China to dominate polysilicon, solar panels, and batteries -- applied to animal feed amino acids.
