Producer
Mission Produce, Inc.
Mission Produce, Inc. (Oxnard CA; NASDAQ: AVO; ~$1.2B revenue FY2024) is a major global avocado distributor and importer, competing directly with Calavo for Mexican avocado supply. Mission operates avocado orchards in Mexico (Jalisco) and Peru, as well as distribution and ripening centers across North America, Europe, and Asia. Mission's Mexican operations include owned and contracted grower relationships in Jalisco state, which became the second USDA-authorized avocado export state in July 2022. Mission also imports mangoes, blueberries, and other tropical produce from Mexico and other Latin American origins. Mission Produce's AVO ticker and Oxnard headquarters reflect the California produce industry's tight integration with Mexican agricultural supply chains. Mission's ripening and distribution infrastructure allows it to manage avocado supply across multiple sourcing regions — providing slightly more geographic diversification than pure Michoacán-dependent importers.

Origin2023
Mission Produce was founded in 1983 by Steve Barnard in Oxnard, California with approximately $10,000 in startup capital and a truck to deliver avocados from California growers to wholesale markets. Barnard was 24 years old. The company grew through the 1990s avocado market transformation: NAFTA (1994) and the 1997 USDA import authorization for Mexican avocados shifted US supply from California to Mexico, and Mission expanded south to source directly from Michoacán and later Jalisco. The strategic bet that distinguished Mission from competitors was vertical integration into owned orchards: rather than being solely a trader and distributor of third-party fruit (as Calavo largely is), Mission invested in owning farms in Mexico and Peru, giving it more supply control during shortage periods. Mission went public in October 2020 (NASDAQ: AVO) during the COVID-era produce demand surge — one of the few companies to IPO during the pandemic. The ticker AVO on a public exchange is an unusual example of a commodity produce company achieving sufficient institutional investor interest for a standalone listing — avocados are among the most traded fresh produce commodities, with USDA weekly price and volume data closely watched by restaurant chains and retail buyers.
