Did you know2023
Mowi salmon is sold as a premium omega-3 health food, but the omega-3 fatty acids in farmed salmon do not originate in the salmon -- they come from the small forage fish (Peruvian anchoveta, Norwegian herring, Chilean mackerel) rendered into fishmeal and fish oil for salmon feed. Mowi is one of the world's largest buyers of Peruvian fishmeal, making a Norwegian salmon farmer deeply dependent on Peruvian fishery quotas set by IMARPE in Lima. When El Nino ocean warming reduces anchoveta recruitment in Peru, Mowi salmon production costs rise, fishmeal prices spike globally, and the omega-3 concentration in Mowi fish actually declines as feed formulators substitute lower-omega-3 plant proteins. Consumers buying Mowi salmon at Whole Foods for omega-3 benefits are unknowingly participating in a supply chain that begins with Peruvian government fishery management decisions.
Mowi ASA ↗Origin2023
Mowi ASA (formerly Marine Harvest) traces its lineage directly to a Unilever food science experiment. In the 1960s, Unilever researchers at Hardangerfjord in Norway pioneered cage-based Atlantic salmon farming as a potential protein source, becoming the first company to successfully rear Atlantic salmon to market weight in sea cages. Unilever eventually exited the aquaculture business, selling its operations through a chain of owners. The resulting company was named Marine Harvest after one of its constituent Unilever subsidiaries, and through a series of mergers absorbed most of its Norwegian competitors including Pan Fish and Fjord Seafood to become the global dominant force in farmed salmon. It renamed itself Mowi in 2019 using a simplified version of a historical Norwegian fishing term.
Mowi ASA ↗Concentration2024
The US imports nearly 100% of its Atlantic salmon — Mowi and two other Norwegian companies control ~70% of global farmed salmon supply from Norwegian fjords The United States consumes approximately 500,000 MT of Atlantic salmon per year but has essentially no domestic Atlantic salmon farming industry at commercial scale. Norway's Mowi (~25% global share), SalMar, and Cermaq dominate global Atlantic salmon farming, primarily in Norwegian fjords where water temperatures of 8-14°C are optimal. Norway's fjord geography is not replicable elsewhere at comparable scale. US consumers depend entirely on Norwegian, Chilean, and Canadian salmon imports. Any Norwegian industry event (ISA epidemic, red tide, feed shortage, regulatory change) directly affects US supermarket shelves.
