Nanjing Redsun is the dominant global producer of propanil technical grade — the selective post-emergence herbicide that is the cornerstone weed control tool for flooded rice production in the US Mid-South, Latin America, and Asian rice paddy systems. Propanil (3,4-dichloropropionanilide, also written 3',4'-dichloropropionanilide) was first registered in 1961 and remains the standard rice weed control tool because of a unique biological property: rice plants detoxify propanil through the enzyme aryl acylamidase at rates sufficient to survive normal field application, while most broadleaf weeds (curly indigo, hemp sesbania, barnyard grass, ducksalad) do not have this enzyme. This enzymatic selectivity makes propanil one of the most precisely species-specific herbicides in agricultural use. Nanjing Redsun grew to dominate global propanil technical production through cost advantages in synthesizing 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA), the precursor compound, at its Nanjing chemical complex. US rice farmers in Arkansas and Louisiana who apply propanil to their flooded fields are overwhelmingly using active ingredient synthesized in Nanjing — a supply chain dependency that became visible in 2017 when a Nanjing Redsun production disruption temporarily constrained US propanil availability during planting season.
