Navarro SiC

HQ ES · Madrid, Spainwebsite ↗

Navarro SiC is the only Spanish producer of silicon carbide, operating since 1950 from two production plants in Spain with combined capacity of approximately 20,000 tonnes/year. Dominant in the southern European SiC market for abrasive, refractory, and metallurgical applications. Competes with Fiven (Norway/Belgium) and Chinese imports across Europe. While a relatively small global producer, Navarro is strategically important to Spanish and Iberian abrasives supply chains.

Navarro SiC (part of Grupo Navarro) operates silicon carbide production in Andorra, Teruel, in the interior of Spain — one of Spain's least-developed and most economically depressed provinces. Like Norway's SiC industry, the Teruel location reflects the fundamental economics of the Acheson process: the Ebro river basin and regional electricity infrastructure provided relatively affordable industrial power compared to coastal Spain. Navarro SiC is one of Europe's primary domestic SiC producers, supplying abrasive grain to Spanish, Italian, and broader European grinding wheel manufacturers who prefer not to depend entirely on Chinese SiC (which controls the majority of global production). Spain produced significant SiC through the mid-20th century as part of its industrial development policy. Navarro represents the survival of this European industrial base through decades of competition from lower-cost Asian producers — sustained by energy logistics, European customer proximity, and quality differentiation for higher-grade abrasive applications.
