Producer

Neste Corporation

Finnish state-controlled oil refiner (NASDAQ HEL: NESTE); world's largest producer of renewable diesel (HVO — Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and one of the largest FAME biodiesel producers. Primary renewable diesel facilities at Porvoo (Finland), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Singapore. Neste produces both FAME biodiesel AND HVO renewable diesel — HVO is chemically different from FAME but serves similar renewable fuel markets. Neste also produces petroleum-derived fuels and aviation fuel. Finland's state oil company became the world leader in renewable diesel by pivoting from fossil fuel production — same company, different product line, 20-year technology development.

  • Origin2023

Neste Corporation was founded in 1948 as Neste Oy -- a Finnish state enterprise established after WWII to give Finland energy security and reduce dependence on Soviet oil supplies. Finland had been a Soviet border state in a precarious security position since the Winter War (1939-1940) and was determined to have domestic energy processing capability. Neste built Finland's first oil refinery in Naantali (1957) and expanded to Porvoo (1965). For 40 years, Neste was a conventional state petroleum refiner. The pivot began in 2007 when Neste launched its NExBTL (Next Biomass To Liquids) technology -- a proprietary hydroprocessing method for converting biological fats and oils to HVO renewable diesel. By 2023, renewable products accounted for 55%+ of Neste's revenue, making a Finnish state oil company the world's largest renewable diesel producer. The same Finnish state that nationalized an oil refinery to prevent Soviet energy dependence created -- through technology investment and EU climate policy tailwind -- the company that leads the global transition away from petroleum diesel.

Neste Corporation is Finland's state-controlled oil refiner — primarily a petroleum company — that became the world's largest producer of renewable diesel (HVO, hydrotreated vegetable oil) through a 20-year technology investment strategy. Neste's Porvoo refinery processes both petroleum crude oil and biological feedstocks (used cooking oil, animal fats, palm oil) at the same physical plant. A Finnish state-owned oil company — one of Northern Europe's primary petroleum fuel suppliers — is simultaneously the world's largest producer of the renewable alternative to those fuels, competing for market share with the petroleum diesel it also refines. Neste's pivot from fossil to renewable was driven by EU climate policy but executed through the same refining engineering expertise as petroleum processing.
