Nestlé was founded in 1866 when Henri Nestlé, a German-born pharmacist in Vevey, Switzerland, developed Farine lactée — a milk-flour-cereal blend for infants whose mothers could not breastfeed. Nestlé's first product was a life-saving medical intervention, not a consumer good: infant mortality was 20-30% in Switzerland at the time, often from nutritional deficiency in formula-fed infants. Nestlé invented instant coffee (Nescafé) in 1938 after the Brazilian government commissioned the company to develop a way to use Brazil's massive coffee surplus — the world's best-selling coffee brand began as a government-commissioned food engineering project to solve an agricultural overproduction problem.
