NDK (Nihon Dempa Kogyo) is majority-owned by Murata Manufacturing — the Japanese company that makes approximately 40% of the world's multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), the passive components in every electronic device. Murata's acquisition of NDK created a situation where the world's dominant MLCC manufacturer also owns a top-tier precision oscillator company. Since virtually every electronic circuit requires both capacitors (Murata MLCCs) and frequency control elements (NDK crystal devices), Murata Group supplies two of the three foundational passive electronic components (capacitor + oscillator; the third being resistors, dominated by Yageo) to the global electronics industry. A disruption at Murata Group affects both the capacitor supply chain and the crystal oscillator supply chain simultaneously — two components that appear in every single piece of digital electronics manufactured globally.

NDK supplies precision timing crystals to 5G base station manufacturers including Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung Networks, and (historically) Huawei. In 5G networks, stratum-1 timing (GPS-disciplined OCXO clocks) synchronizes the entire network — without precise timing, 5G's advanced antenna beamforming and ultra-low-latency functions fail. NDK's OCXOs (and competing Epson, Rakon, and Microchip devices) are in the timing cards of base stations deployed globally. When the US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) placed Huawei on the Entity List in 2019, NDK and other Japanese crystal oscillator suppliers faced questions about whether their components could continue to ship to Huawei. Japanese timing crystal companies occupy a politically sensitive position: their products enable global telecommunications infrastructure including in countries and networks that US export control policy considers adversarial. The same Japanese crystal enabling a T-Mobile 5G tower enables a Chinese People's Liberation Army base station.
