    Nippon Shokubhai ("Japan Catalyst") was founded in 1941 to produce ethylene oxide (EO) via silver-catalyst oxidation of ethylene — a sophisticated catalytic process developed in the context of wartime Japan's need for domestic chemical production. Post-war, the EO platform expanded to acrylic acid (propylene oxidation), and in the 1970s-80s, Nippon Shokubhai developed superabsorbent polymer (SAP) chemistry — crosslinked sodium polyacrylate that can absorb 300x its weight in liquid. SAP enabled the modern disposable diaper: before SAP, diapers used cellulose fluff pulp alone, which was bulky and leaked. Nippon Shokubhai's SAP made ultra-thin, high-capacity diapers economically viable, accelerating the global adoption of disposable diapers from the 1980s onward.
