Octapharma is the only major plasma fractionation company that is privately family-owned — CEO Wolfgang Marguerre (son-in-law of founder Friedhelm Boeche) has run the company without public market pressure since its founding in 1983. This private ownership structure allows Octapharma to make long-term decisions impossible for public companies: they invested in European fractionation capacity even during years when IVIG prices were low, and developed NUWIQ (recombinant Factor VIII) using a human cell line (HEK293 derived from human embryonic kidney cells) rather than the industry-standard Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells. NUWIQ is the only recombinant FVIII produced in a human cell line — this matters clinically because it may reduce the immunogenicity that causes inhibitor development in hemophilia patients (a serious complication requiring expensive bypass therapy). A family-owned Swiss company made the first truly human-derived recombinant Factor VIII while all publicly-traded competitors continued using hamster cell lines to save development cost.
