Ohara makes the glass that lenses see through and the glass that refuses to move. As one of a handful of precision optical-glass makers (with HOYA and Schott), it supplies the optical glass in camera, microscope and projector lenses. But its more strategic product is the opposite of a lens: an ultra-low-thermal-expansion glass-ceramic (CLEARCERAM-Z) engineered to barely change size with temperature, used for semiconductor lithography substrates and stage components — where a nanometer of thermal drift ruins a chip — and for the mirror blanks of giant astronomical telescopes. So one Japanese glass company sits under consumer and scientific imaging and the precision platforms of chipmaking and the world's biggest telescopes at once. The same materials science that focuses light in a camera also holds a chip-printing stage, or a telescope mirror, perfectly still — two opposite jobs for glass, mastered by one firm.
