In a geopolitical conflict scenario — US-China trade war escalation, Korean Peninsula military crisis, or European supply disruption — the US would have essentially no fallback domestic tinplate production for the food can industry that provides the non-perishable food supply for US military logistics, disaster preparedness stockpiles, and everyday American canned food consumption. The same vulnerability that exposed the US to Chinese API pharmaceutical dependency applies to tinplate: decades of offshore sourcing for cost efficiency has left US domestic production capacity below any meaningful strategic reserve threshold. Ohio Coatings' Yorkville facility is the entire US strategic tinplate production position.
