Concentration2024
MKS PAMP shows the other half of the gold chokepoint. It pairs one of the four big Swiss refineries — PAMP — with one of the world's largest precious-metals trading houses, MKS. So a single group both physically refines gold into tradable LBMA bars and is a major dealer that prices, finances and moves metal in the wholesale market. That integration concentrates more than the physical processing of gold; it puts a meaningful share of the market-making and flow of gold in the same hands that refine it. Combined with the fact that a handful of Swiss refiners process most of the world's gold, the picture is of a precious-metals system where both the metal and its movement run through a very small number of Geneva-area firms.

PAMP did something unusual: it branded a commodity that is supposed to be perfectly fungible. Its Lady Fortuna minted gold bars are recognized and trusted worldwide and command a premium over generic gold, functioning as an "ingredient brand" within bullion. The deeper point is about trust: even with the ultimate fungible asset, the assurance that a small bar is genuine, of stated purity, and responsibly sourced is in practice the PAMP (or Valcambi/Argor) stamp. So a trust-and-provenance franchise sits on top of pure metal, and a few refiner brands effectively underwrite the credibility of retail gold. That makes these refiners not just physical processors but the certifiers whose reputation backs a large part of the world's investable gold.
