Perrigo was founded in 1887 in Allegan, Michigan by Luther Perrigo — an era before the modern pharmaceutical industry existed, when druggists compounded their own remedies and there was no concept of 'generic vs. brand' drugs. Luther Perrigo pioneered the idea of manufacturing standardized drug products specifically for rural general stores to resell under the store's name — the foundational concept of 'private label' pharmaceuticals. For most of the 20th century, Perrigo was a quiet Allegan Michigan manufacturer of store-brand OTC products. The company's most dramatic transformation came in 2013: Perrigo executed a USD 8.6 billion acquisition of Irish specialty pharmaceutical company Elan Corporation, using the deal to reincorporate in Dublin, Ireland under lower Irish corporate tax rates. An 1887 Allegan Michigan private-label pharmacy supplier became a Dublin, Ireland-incorporated plc — while remaining operationally headquartered in Michigan. This made Perrigo an American OTC manufacturer with Irish tax domicile, the same inversion structure used by Medtronic, Trane Technologies, and others.
