Plansee's tungsten products simultaneously supply four industries that would appear unrelated to a typical consumer: (1) The tungsten PVD sputtering target that deposits the contact plug layer in every TSMC, Samsung, and Intel advanced semiconductor chip. (2) The tungsten anode inside every medical CT scanner and dental X-ray tube that generates the photons for medical imaging. (3) The tungsten heavy alloy (WHA, 90-97% W) used as kinetic energy penetrators in armor-piercing ammunition (including the US Army's M829 APFSDS tank round). (4) The tungsten wire filament in halogen lamps, aircraft cockpit indicator lights, and scientific instrument radiation sources. The same 74-proton element, processed from ore to product at Plansee's Reutte plant and at GTP in Pennsylvania, flows from a single supply chain into semiconductor fabrication, medical imaging, weapons penetrators, and lighting — making tungsten availability simultaneously a chip yield constraint, a hospital imaging capacity constraint, and a military munitions readiness constraint.

China controls approximately 80% of global tungsten mining production (primary sources: Jiangxi Province, inner Mongolia) and an even higher fraction of tungsten chemical processing capacity. The non-Chinese Western tungsten supply chain runs almost entirely through two companies: Plansee Group (Austria/US) via Global Tungsten & Powders, and H.C. Starck (formerly a Bayer AG subsidiary, now owned by Masan High-Tech Materials). When the US Department of Defense added tungsten to the Critical Materials List, the actionable response was to support GTP's Towanda, Pennsylvania facility — the facility that had been an important tungsten processing site since World War II when US tungsten demand surged for military applications. The Western tungsten supply chain for semiconductor sputtering targets, medical imaging, and military penetrators depends on a handful of non-Chinese processing facilities, the largest of which was founded in an Austrian valley by a private family in 1921 and has never been publicly traded.

Plansee Group was founded in 1921 by Paul Schwarzkopf in Reutte, Tyrol — a remote Austrian Alpine valley that had access to abundant hydroelectric power from the Inn River. Schwarzkopf chose Reutte specifically because refining and working refractory metals (tungsten, molybdenum) requires enormous amounts of electricity for sintering and arc melting, and Alpine hydropower provided cheap, reliable power. A century later, the Schwarzkopf family still privately controls Plansee Group from the same Tyrolean valley. Their US subsidiary, Global Tungsten & Powders (GTP) in Towanda, Pennsylvania, is one of the only operating US tungsten powder processing facilities — making Plansee a critical non-Chinese Western source for semiconductor-grade tungsten at a time when China controls approximately 80% of global tungsten mining and processing. The founding decision to locate in an Austrian Alpine valley for hydroelectric access in 1921 now makes Plansee strategically important to US semiconductor supply chain security a century later.
