Origin2023
Plastiape S.p.A. operates in Osnago (Lecco), Lombardy — part of Italy's 'Third Italy' precision manufacturing belt in the pre-Alpine foothills north of Milan. Lombardy's precision plastics and tooling industry emerged from the same technical heritage that made the region famous for silk weaving and precision machinery: exact measurement, fine tolerances, and artisanal craft applied to industrial polymer processing. Plastiape developed the RS01 Monodose dry powder inhaler device as an 'open platform' — a DPI device specification that pharmaceutical companies can license to deliver their drug formulations without developing a proprietary device. This open-platform concept was commercially important: GSK's Diskus, AstraZeneca's Turbuhaler, and Boehringer's HandiHaler are all proprietary devices that generic manufacturers cannot copy; the RS01 gave generic pharmaceutical companies access to a qualified, ready-to-use DPI platform for filing generic drug applications. An Italian polymer manufacturer in the Alps foothills sitting between cosmetic dispensers and pharmaceutical drug delivery devices is the infrastructure that made generic DPI competition commercially viable.

Plastiape's RS01 device is visible in two supply chains: (1) Generic respiratory pharmaceutical — the RS01 is the open-platform DPI used in generic budesonide, generic formoterol, and generic fluticasone DPI products for asthma and COPD; its availability allows pharmaceutical companies without DPI device expertise to file ANDA (generic) or 505(b)(2) applications for DPI products; (2) Cosmetic packaging — the same Plastiape polymer precision manufacturing facility produces cosmetic dispensers, caps, and closures for Italian and European cosmetics brands (the same Alps-foothills precision polymer tradition that makes cosmetic bottle closures also makes DPI drug delivery devices). The presence of the same Italian manufacturer in both drug delivery and cosmetics is not unusual for European precision polymer companies — the technical demands of pharmaceutical dispensing (dimensional tolerances, surface finish, functional testing) overlap with premium cosmetics packaging requirements. The open-platform RS01 device specifically contributed to global access to affordable DPI respiratory medicines by enabling generic competition against branded proprietary DPI products.
