REIT in 2014) is the world's largest producer of high-purity cellulose specialties and a major fluff pulp producer. Rayonier AM's Jesup GA mill is the world's largest single-site cellulose specialty facility. Rayonier AM produces: (1) high-purity cellulose for acetate (cigarette filters, LCD film) — 40% of business; (2) viscose/commodity specialty cellulose (textile fibers) — 30%; and (3) fluff pulp for diapers — ~30%. The Jesup GA facility processes loblolly pine logs from Rayonier's managed timberlands and third-party forestry operations in the US Southeast. Rayonier AM acquired Tembec (Canada) in 2017 for ~$800M, adding Canadian forest-based specialty cellulose capacity.

Rayonier Advanced Materials' Jesup, Georgia facility processes loblolly pine into three products that appear in entirely unrelated consumer industries: (1) high-alpha specialty cellulose that becomes the cellulose acetate in cigarette filters — the material filtering every cigarette smoked globally; (2) high-purity cellulose that is dissolved and re-formed as optical film in LCD displays — the same pine-derived material trapping light in the screens of televisions, monitors, and tablets; and (3) fluff pulp that is mechanically separated into fibers for baby diaper absorbent cores. A single Georgia pine can thus become a cigarette filter, a display screen component, or a diaper — processed by the same Jesup facility. The cigarette manufacturer's supply chain, the consumer electronics display supply chain, and the baby care supply chain converge at a Jacksonville FL company that most participants in any of those industries have never heard of.

Rayonier Advanced Materials was spun off from Rayonier Inc. (the timber REIT) in 2014 when Rayonier decided that specialty cellulose manufacturing was incompatible with a real estate investment trust structure. The specialty cellulose business had been part of Rayonier since ITT Corporation (the defense electronics conglomerate that made night vision goggles and military electronics) decided to divest its natural resources businesses in the 1990s. Rayonier Inc. was spun off from ITT in 1994; Rayonier AM was then spun off from Rayonier Inc. in 2014 — two degrees of separation from ITT's night vision goggle heritage to a Jacksonville FL cellulose manufacturer. The Jesup, Georgia mill is the world's largest single-site specialty cellulose facility, operating continuously as the primary US-controlled high-alpha cellulose producer for cigarette filter and optical film applications.
