RiceTec is the dominant private hybrid rice seed company in the United States, supplying an estimated 40% of US certified rice seed, and it is wholly owned by the Fuerst von Liechtenstein Foundation -- the investment arm of the ruling royal family of Liechtenstein. Most American rice farmers who plant RiceTec XL hybrid varieties have no awareness that their seed supply runs through European royalty. The company was founded in 1994 in Alvin, Texas after the Liechtenstein family acquired US rice breeding assets and built a commercially viable hybrid seed program that now competes against public university varieties.

In 1997, RiceTec filed US patents on Basmati-type rice lines bred from traditional South Asian varieties, sparking an international IP dispute involving the governments of India and Pakistan who argued the patents amounted to biopiracy of centuries-old agricultural heritage. The USPTO ultimately cancelled most of the claims after sustained diplomatic pressure and a formal challenge by India. The case became a landmark in the debate over plant variety patents and traditional knowledge, leading to new WTO and CBD frameworks. Despite the controversy, RiceTec continued operating and today controls critical hybrid seed IP for US rice production -- the same company that nearly patented South Asian rice heritage now supplies 40% of US rice planting seed.
