SARIA Group (Devro parent)

HQ DE · Selm, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germanywebsite ↗

German animal by-products rendering and organic recycling company; parent of Devro since April 2023. SARIA processes animal by-products from European slaughterhouses — blood, bone, hide, feathers, carcasses — into rendered products (tallow, animal feed, biofuels, pet food, gelatin). SARIA's acquisition of Devro is strategically vertical: SARIA collects bovine hides and collagen-rich by-products from European slaughterhouses, and Devro converts that bovine corium into edible collagen casings. Owned by the Rethmann Group (German private family conglomerate; also owns Remondis, one of Europe's largest waste management companies).

SARIA Bio-Industries — which processes animal by-products from European slaughterhouses (blood, bone, hide, carcass, feathers) into rendered products — now owns Devro, the world's largest collagen casing manufacturer. The supply chain is perfectly circular: SARIA collects bovine hides from the same slaughterhouses that supply the beef trim feedstock for sausages; the bovine corium (inner hide layer) is processed into collagen; Devro extrudes that collagen into edible casings; the casings are used to make sausages from the same animals whose hides were collected. SARIA has achieved vertical integration from slaughterhouse by-product collection to finished sausage casing — the entire animal is monetized within the same corporate family.

  • Origin2023

SARIA Group is the rendering and bio-industries arm of Rethmann Group — a private German family conglomerate whose other major business is Remondis, one of Europe's largest waste management companies. The Rethmann family thus controls two parallel waste-to-value systems: Remondis handles municipal and industrial solid waste, while SARIA handles animal by-products from European slaughterhouses and farms. In April 2023, SARIA acquired Devro plc (the world's largest collagen casing manufacturer) for approximately £1.07 billion, completing a vertical integration from by-product collection to finished food processing input.

  • Capacity2023

SARIA's Devro subsidiary operates the only collagen casing manufacturing plant in the Southern Hemisphere (Bathurst, Australia) and is one of two collagen casing producers with significant US manufacturing presence (Sandy Run, South Carolina and Centennial, Colorado). Devro's product includes SmallCal, MidCal, and LargeCal casing grades serving fresh, smoked, and cooked sausage categories globally. SARIA's ownership creates the unique dynamic where a European animal by-product processor controls the dominant supply of a food ingredient critical to sausage manufacturers across four continents.
