Satake Corporation was founded in 1896 in Hiroshima by Riichi Satake, who invented Japan's first electrical rice milling machine — replacing the foot-powered mortar-and-pestle rice polishing (foot stamps) that had been used for centuries. Satake's mechanical rice whitener came 29 years after the Meiji Restoration that modernized Japan; it mechanized one of the most labor-intensive daily tasks of Japanese agriculture and food production. The Hiroshima company's equipment spread across Japan as the country industrialized and urbanized, making centralized rice milling viable and enabling the shift from household rice polishing to commercial mill-processed white rice. Nearly 130 years later, Satake remains headquartered in Hiroshima and controls roughly 30% of the world's rice milling equipment installed base — a Hiroshima company's machinery quietly processing the staple grain that feeds 3.5 billion people across Asia.
