The zipper that closes an H&M jacket and the zipper that seals an Ebola-response isolation suit are made by the same manufacturers on the same equipment using the same polymer and metal chains — the only difference is quality grade and testing certification. When COVID created a global surge in demand for PPE isolation suits, zipper supply from Fujian factories became a PPE bottleneck because fashion apparel demand and medical protective equipment demand shared the same factory output.

SBS Zipper was founded in 1984 in Jinjiang, Fujian Province — China's "shoe capital" — during the early years of China's economic opening. Jinjiang's light manufacturing ecosystem (shoes, garments, sporting goods) created a natural customer base for zipper components. SBS grew to challenge YKK's global dominance by competing on price and scale, becoming China's #1 and the world's #2 zipper manufacturer. It listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2007 and expanded to five production bases across coastal and inland China.
