    Schaeffler — bearings and clutches — is positioning itself as a green-hydrogen component supplier. It manufactures metallic bipolar plates, the precision-stamped, coated metal sheets stacked by the hundreds inside electrolyzer cells (to split water into hydrogen) and inside fuel cells (to recombine it). The competency transfers directly: the same high-precision metal forming, surface coating and high-volume stamping that make bearing and engine components are what bipolar plates require. So a company most people file under "auto parts and bearings" is angling to sit inside the electrolyzer and fuel-cell stacks at the heart of the hydrogen economy — a cross-over from legacy mechanical components into energy-transition electrochemistry.

    Schaeffler's foundation is a single bearing innovation. In 1949 Georg Schaeffler developed the cage-guided needle roller bearing — a way to keep the slender rollers of a needle bearing aligned so they could carry heavy loads in a tight space — and built the INA company around it. That component went into transmissions and engines worldwide, and the family business grew into a global motion-technology group that later added FAG bearings, LuK clutches and, after acquiring Vitesco, electric-powertrain and power-electronics lines. A precision detail of how tiny rollers are held in place seeded one of the world's largest automotive and industrial suppliers.
