Sierra Pacific Industries was founded in 1949 by Red Emmerson in Red Bluff, California. The Emmerson family began with a single sawmill and built Sierra Pacific through aggressive timberland acquisition in Northern California and Washington state — acquiring private timberlands from other companies and from public land sales. By the 2000s, Sierra Pacific had become California's largest private timber landowner (approximately 1.9 million acres) and one of the largest in the US Pacific Northwest. The scale of private ownership allowed Sierra Pacific to implement continuous forest management cycles — planting, thinning, and harvesting in planned rotations — in contrast to the unpredictable public timber sale system that many smaller mills depend on. The vertically integrated model (own the land, grow the timber, saw the lumber, generate power from the waste) made Sierra Pacific one of the most self-sufficient lumber companies in the US.
