Concentration2024
The microcrystalline cellulose that binds the world's tablets is often described as a Western duopoly (JRS, DuPont/IFF's Avicel), but the third pillar is Indian: Sigachi Industries is one of the largest dedicated, pure-play MCC producers on earth — MCC is its core business, not a fiber-company sideline. Its rise gives the global pill-excipient supply more geographic diversity, but it also routes a meaningful share of that supply through India's pharmaceutical-manufacturing base, which already dominates global generic-drug production. So the same country that makes a huge fraction of the world's generic pills is also increasingly making the inert cellulose that physically holds those pills together — a doubling-up of dependence on one manufacturing geography.

Sigachi makes the same crystalline cellulose in pharma, food and cosmetic grades off one core capability. The MCC that is a tablet binder in medicine is, in food grade, a bulking, anti-caking and fat-replacer ingredient in processed foods, and in cosmetic grade a texturizer and absorbent in personal-care products. A single refined plant-cellulose material therefore threads through three consumer industries at once, and a pure-play producer like Sigachi sits beneath all of them — pills, packaged food and cosmetics resting on grades of the same powder.
