Lumber production has a hidden dependency on a critical mineral, hiding in the saw tip. Every board cut at a sawmill is sliced by band or circular saw blades that dull and must constantly be re-tipped or replaced — Simonds makes these consumable blades — and the part that actually does the cutting and wears out is the tungsten-carbide (or stellite) tip, not the steel blade body. Tungsten is heavily China-concentrated and is on most countries' critical-minerals lists. So the wood-products industry, seemingly a domestic forestry business, quietly rides on the tungsten-carbide supply chain through the cutting tips of its saws: a disruption to carbide tooling raises the running cost and throughput of every sawmill, linking lumber output to a geopolitically sensitive metal almost no one associates with wood.
