SK Geo Centric (formerly SK Global Chemical) is a subsidiary of SK Innovation, part of the SK Group conglomerate — one of South Korea's largest chaebol, founded in 1953 by Chey Jong-hyun. SK Group began as a textile company (Sunkyong Textiles) in the early 1950s under Korea's postwar industrialization, then expanded into energy (oil refining) and chemicals as Korea's government-directed industrial policy channeled national capital into petrochemical complexes at Ulsan. Ulsan — South Korea's east coast industrial city at the mouth of the Taehwa River — became the manufacturing center for Hyundai Motor, SK refining, and dozens of allied chemical companies through the 1970s-80s government-orchestrated heavy chemical industrialization (HCI) drive. The same government-directed capital allocation that built Hyundai's shipyards in Ulsan also funded SK's petrochemical complexes there. SK's Ulsan naphtha cracker and EPDM plants represent the industrial legacy of Korean national industrial policy. In 2022, SK Innovation rebranded the chemical subsidiary as SK Geo Centric, positioning for a circular economy transition — signaling intent to pivot from traditional fossil-based petrochemical production toward recycled and bio-based materials, though traditional petrochemical output including EPDM remains the business core.
