SKF, the Swedish bearing company, created Volvo. In 1927 Volvo was founded as a subsidiary of SKF to build cars — partly to generate domestic demand for SKF's own bearings — and the name "Volvo" is Latin for "I roll," originally registered by SKF as a bearing trademark. The carmaker was later spun out, but one of the world's iconic automotive brands literally began life inside a ball-bearing manufacturer. It is the cleanest example of a components company spawning a finished-goods giant: the bearing maker didn't just supply the car industry, for a time it owned a piece of it outright.

Bearings are the most universal and least-noticed dependency in machinery: virtually everything that rotates — wind-turbine drivetrains, jet engines, railway axles, electric-motor shafts, gearboxes, pumps, machine tools — runs on rolling-element bearings. The global supply of them is concentrated in roughly five companies (SKF, Schaeffler, NSK, NTN, Timken), of which SKF is the largest. That makes bearing capacity a quiet systemic chokepoint sitting beneath wind energy, aerospace, rail, automotive and general industry at the same time. A shock to high-precision bearing supply would propagate into nearly every machine-building sector simultaneously, which is exactly why bearings are treated as strategic in industrial-policy reviews.
