Skyworks makes the RF power amplifiers and front-end modules inside virtually every iPhone (Apple is ~55% of Skyworks revenue), and the same GaAs (gallium arsenide) and BAW (bulk acoustic wave) filter technology serves aerospace and defense customers including electronic warfare, SATCOM terminals, and phased-array radar. Civilian smartphone volume -- billions of units per year -- drives down the manufacturing cost of GaAs semiconductor processes that defense customers then access at lower cost per component. US military phased-array radar modernization programs directly benefit from the commercial smartphone industry funding GaAs fab technology development that Skyworks and its competitors supply to both markets. This is a reverse dual-use: commercial consumer electronics is subsidizing defense technology advancement through shared semiconductor process economics.

Skyworks Solutions was formed in 2002 from the merger of two legacy defense electronics lineages: Conexant Systems (spun out of Rockwell International, maker of B-1 bomber avionics and Space Shuttle computers) and the wireless semiconductor division of Alpha Industries (whose GaAs wafer fab in Woburn MA served military radar and communications programs). The RF semiconductor expertise developed over decades making defense radio systems was suddenly commercially viable in the smartphone era, where every handset needed high-performance radio amplifiers. The defense RF engineers who had designed components for F-16 fire control radars and military satellite uplinks found themselves designing the power amplifiers for Nokia 3G phones and eventually Apple iPhones.
