Origin2023
Sunwoda Electronic was founded in 1997 in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province — one year after Huawei's R&D center relocation to Shenzhen and during the establishment of the Shenzhen electronics manufacturing ecosystem that would become the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturing cluster. Sunwoda started as a battery pack assembler: taking lithium-ion cells manufactured by Japanese and Korean suppliers (Sony, Sanyo, Samsung SDI) and assembling them into finished packs for devices made by Shenzhen electronics manufacturers. As Chinese cell chemistry expertise grew — driven partly by knowledge transfer from Japanese and Korean joint ventures — Sunwoda transitioned from pack assembly to cell manufacture, developing in-house lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) polymer cell production for the Android smartphone market that was exploding through the 2010s. The company is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange and has expanded into EV battery cells as the Chinese automotive industry electrified. Sunwoda illustrates the Chinese industrial policy model in batteries: start with low-value-add assembly, build process expertise, develop cell manufacturing capability, and expand up the value chain into EV applications where national policy provides preferential support.
