Suzano S.A. (Sao Paulo Brazil; B3: SUZB3; ~BRL 50B revenue; formed 2018 by merger of Suzano Papel e Celulose and Fibria Celulose) is the world's largest eucalyptus pulp producer — and increasingly a competitor in the fluff pulp market as eucalyptus-based fluff pulp gains acceptance. Suzano merged with Fibria in 2018 to create the world's largest pulp company by volume. While eucalyptus (short-fiber) pulp is traditionally used for tissue and printing paper (not fluff pulp, which requires long-fiber softwood), Suzano has been developing and marketing eucalyptus fluff pulp as an alternative to softwood for markets where fiber length requirements are less critical. Suzano's Cerrado Project (Mato Grosso do Sul state; capacity 2.5 million tonnes/year eucalyptus pulp — the world's largest single pulp project when operational 2024-2025) positions Brazil as a growing fluff pulp competitor to US Southern pine-based producers.

Suzano is the world's largest eucalyptus pulp producer — primarily known for supplying tissue manufacturers (selling to Kimberly-Clark, Essity, and other tissue companies) and printing/writing paper mills. What the global diaper supply chain is beginning to track is that Suzano has been developing and commercializing eucalyptus-based fluff pulp as an alternative to softwood fluff pulp — challenging International Paper's and Rayonier AM's domination of the diaper absorbent fiber market. Eucalyptus fluff pulp (short fiber) has different absorbency characteristics than softwood fluff (long fiber), but Suzano's scale and Brazilian cost advantages make it a credible challenger if technical acceptance grows. Suzano Papel e Celulose was founded in 1924 in São Paulo by Leon Feffer — a Ukrainian-Jewish immigrant who started a paper distribution business and moved into paper manufacturing. The company grew as Brazil's paper demand expanded and eucalyptus plantations proved ideal for pulp production in tropical conditions (eucalyptus grows in 7 years in Brazil vs. 25+ years for pine in the US). Suzano became a major eucalyptus pulp exporter in the 1980s-90s. The 2018 merger with Fibria Celulose (itself formed from the merger of VCP and Aracruz) created the world's largest pulp company. Fibria's predecessor Aracruz Celulose had famously lost approximately $2.5B on Brazilian real/US dollar currency derivative contracts in 2008 — nearly destroying the company before the Fibria restructuring. The same eucalyptus pulp company that nearly went bankrupt in 2008 from currency speculation eventually became the largest pulp company in the world through merger with Suzano.
