Symrise is the world's largest menthol producer — and menthol is simultaneously the active flavoring in menthol cigarettes, the cooling agent in Colgate/Crest toothpaste, the primary active in Vicks VapoRub (OTC pharmaceutical), and the mint flavor in menthol tea and mint chocolate. These are four completely different regulated industries (tobacco, consumer products, pharmaceutical, food) with completely different regulatory frameworks, all dependent on the same molecule from the same Symrise production complex in Holzminden, Germany. In April 2022, the FDA proposed a rule to ban menthol cigarettes, which would eliminate a significant market for Symrise's menthol. The same FDA that regulates pharmaceutical Vicks VapoRub ingredients would ban the tobacco use of the same menthol compound. Symrise sells the same natural and synthetic L-menthol into smoking cessation (menthol patches to reduce cigarette cravings), mentholated cigarettes, and pharmaceutical cough drops — three different positions in the tobacco-to-cessation spectrum from the same supplier.
