Did you know2023
Royal TenCate — parent of TenCate Protective Fabrics (firefighter turnout gear materials) — is simultaneously the world's largest manufacturer of artificial turf (TenCate Grass) used in FIFA World Cup stadiums, Olympic venues, NFL facilities, and military training grounds. The same Dutch technical textiles heritage that develops PBI/Kevlar outer shells for firefighter protection also makes the synthetic turf fibers used at the Super Bowl, FIFA World Cup venues in Qatar, and the Rose Bowl. TenCate Advanced Composites also makes CETEX thermoplastic composite panels for Airbus A380 structural applications. One Dutch company's technical fiber expertise spans: the fabric protecting firefighters inside burning buildings, the grass-substitute surface at international sports events, and structural panels in commercial aircraft — three completely unrelated markets served by the same 300-year-old Dutch textile science.

TenCate Protective Fabrics' AGILITY Pro and PBI Gold turnout fabrics are in a market with significant concentration: TenCate and Milliken & Company dominate the firefighter protective outer shell fabric supply, which then feeds to a highly concentrated turnout gear manufacturer market (Globe/MSA, Honeywell Morning Pride, Lion Apparel). Fire departments typically specify fabric types in their procurement — a department ordering 'AGILITY Pro outer shell' is specifying TenCate. Changing fabric specifications requires NFPA 1971 recertification of the entire garment, creating switching costs. The fabric certification system (combined NFPA 1971 + manufacturer certification) means that once a department has standardized on a fabric, changing suppliers is a multi-year process. A Dutch fabric manufacturer's product certification is effectively built into the specification language of thousands of US municipal procurement contracts.
TenCate Protective Fabrics ↗Origin2023
TenCate Protective Fabrics is a division of Royal TenCate (later restructured), a Dutch technical textiles company founded in 1704 as Nijverdal-Ten Cate, one of the oldest textile companies in the Netherlands. Over 300 years, the company evolved from weaving linen and cotton to advanced technical fibers. The protective fabrics division developed FR (flame-resistant) fabrics by incorporating Nomex, Kevlar, and PBI specialty fibers into woven fabric structures designed to meet NFPA thermal protection standards. TenCate's position as primary fabric supplier to Globe/MSA and Honeywell Morning Pride means its AGILITY and PBI Gold fabrics appear in the majority of US firefighter turnout gear outer shells — an invisible supply chain node that most fire departments don't know by name, even though TenCate fabric is what stands between a firefighter and the fire.
