Inside every Tetra Brik Aseptic carton (the rectangular milk and juice carton) is a thin aluminum foil layer sandwiched between paperboard and polyethylene films. This aluminum barrier is what allows Tetra Pak cartons to be stored at ambient temperature for 6-12 months without refrigeration — the foil blocks oxygen and light, preventing the UHT-sterilized contents from spoiling. Tetra Pak is one of the world's largest single consumers of aluminum foil (on a surface-area basis), consuming foil from the same aluminum rolling mills that supply pharmaceutical blister pack foil and household kitchen aluminum foil. When aluminum became scarce during post-COVID supply chain disruptions (2021-2022), Tetra Pak experienced packaging material shortages simultaneously with pharmaceutical manufacturers and consumer packaging companies — because all three compete for the same thin-gauge aluminum foil from the same rolling mills (Hydro, Novelis, Hindalco/Aleris). A dairy packaging shortage and a pharmaceutical blister pack shortage trace to the same aluminum rolling mill supply chain — connected through Tetra Pak as the hidden bridge.
Tetra Pak International ↗Concentration2024
Tetra Pak is the world's only truly global aseptic liquid food packaging company at scale — filling ~180 billion packages annually from 80+ manufacturing plants across 160+ countries. Their machine-and-material razor-and-razorblade model means that every dairy, juice, soup, and wine company running a Tetra Pak filling line must buy Tetra Pak carton material; switching to SIG Combibloc or Elopak requires replacing all filling machines (capital investment of hundreds of thousands to millions per line). Tetra Pak controls the filling speed (their Tetra Pak A3/Speed machines run at 30,000+ packs/hour), the machine maintenance schedule, and the carton specification — a private Swedish family company has locked in the world's largest dairy processors (Nestlé, Fonterra, FrieslandCampina) into a single-supplier carton format that touches approximately $400-500B in annual global liquid food trade. Tetra Pak's market position is unlike almost any other packaging company: they do not face meaningful competition in the aseptic brick carton segment globally, and the installed machine base makes customer switching effectively impossible without years of factory investment.
Tetra Pak International ↗Origin2024
Tetra Pak was founded in Lund, Sweden in 1951 by Ruben Rausing, based on a then-radical principle: "a package should save more than it costs." Rausing's insight was that the cost of refrigerating and shipping glass bottles of milk over long distances was economically inefficient — better to fill a carton at the point of production and ship the product at ambient temperature. The Tetra Pak "Tetrahedron" pack (1952) — a four-sided pyramid folded from a continuous tube of polyethylene-coated paper — was the first commercially successful ambient liquid food container. The 1969 introduction of Tetra Brik Aseptic (the rectangular brick carton now sold globally) combined aseptic (sterile) filling with multilayer laminate packaging to allow UHT milk to sit on an unrefrigerated shelf for 6-12 months. This single product, developed by a Swedish private company, enabled the global dairy industry to reach consumers without cold chain infrastructure — and is now how most of humanity's liquid dairy nutrition is consumed outside North America. The Rausing family controls Tetra Laval Group (Tetra Pak + Sidel + DeLaval) as a closely held private company — never IPO'd, not subject to quarterly earnings accountability, one of Europe's wealthiest private families controlling one of the world's most critical food infrastructure platforms.
