Tongkun Group is known as the world's largest polyester filament producer, primarily supplying fast-fashion apparel supply chains. But the same polyester filament technology produces: automotive seatbelt yarn (safety-critical, FMVSS-compliant), tire cord (load-bearing reinforcement inside tires), and industrial filtration fabrics (air and water filtration). The company that determines the global floor price for the synthetic fiber in H&M t-shirts is simultaneously a supplier in the automotive safety supply chain and the industrial water treatment supply chain — all three sectors compete for polyester filament capacity at the same Tongxiang complex, making Tongkun a hidden intersection point for apparel, automotive safety, and environmental infrastructure.

Tongkun Group was founded by Chen Shandong in 1986 in Tongxiang, Zhejiang — at the time a small texturing workshop within China's nascent synthetic fiber industry. Chen expanded through the 1990s-2000s by integrating backwards from texturing into polyester polymerization and then PTA production, becoming the largest integrated PTA-polyester company in the world by the 2010s. Tongkun's Tongxiang base in the Yangtze River Delta became the global center of polyester filament production, with other large producers (Xinfengming, Hengyi) clustering nearby.
