Did you know2024
Most consumers meet magnesium as a lightweight camera or laptop body — but that's a tiny, visible sliver of why the metal is strategically critical. Magnesium's bigger role is invisible: it is an essential alloying element in virtually all structural aluminum. The aluminum sheet in car bodies and beverage cans, and the alloys in aircraft, generally cannot be made without adding magnesium; it's also central to die-cast automotive and electronics parts and to steel desulfurization. And the supply is extraordinarily concentrated — China produces roughly 85–90% of the world's primary magnesium. That's why, when China's 2021 energy crackdown idled magnesium smelters, Europe (which has almost no domestic production) faced the prospect of its entire aluminum and automotive supply seizing up within weeks. So a metal the public associates with a camera shell is actually a near-single-sourced master ingredient without which much of the world's metal manufacturing stops.
US Magnesium LLC ↗Chokepoint2024
US Magnesium is the only primary magnesium producer in the United States — a single plant at Rowley, Utah, extracting the metal from Great Salt Lake brine — which makes it a national chokepoint with no domestic backup. Its near-monopoly is sustained partly by antidumping duties that keep cheaper Chinese imports out, but that same protection means there is no second U.S. source if it falters. The fragility became real in 2021, when a process problem cut the plant's output just as the China-driven global magnesium squeeze hit, deepening a domestic shortage of magnesium and the aluminum alloys that depend on it. It is a textbook case of concentration risk: a strategically vital material reduced, inside the world's largest economy, to one company at one site — so a single operational stumble there propagates straight into automakers, can makers and defense suppliers. US Magnesium LLC ↗Incident2024
The fate of America's only magnesium plant is tied to the health of a lake that is disappearing. US Magnesium's feedstock is the concentrated brine of the Great Salt Lake, and that lake has fallen to record-low levels amid drought and upstream water diversion — exposing lakebed, raising salinity, and threatening the brine chemistry the plant depends on. So a climate-and-water crisis in Utah is simultaneously an industrial-supply risk for a strategic metal: if the lake's decline forces changes to or curtailment of brine extraction, the only domestic magnesium source could be constrained by hydrology, not markets. The company has also long been an environmental flashpoint (a major source of chlorine and other emissions in the area). It's a vivid illustration that critical-material security isn't only about geology and geopolitics — it can hinge on the level of a shrinking saline lake.
