VDL ETG (VDL Enabling Technologies Group)
Dutch precision mechatronics manufacturer in Eindhoven; originated as Philips Machinefabrieken (100+ year history), acquired by VDL Groep from Philips in 2006. Produces vacuum vessels for the EUV source, high-precision substrate handling systems, accurate positioning systems, cabling, and complex structural mechatronics for ASML scanners. Decades-long exclusive relationship with ASML inherited from the Philips era. Key part of the Dutch semiconductor ecosystem cluster around Eindhoven (ASML, VDL, NXP, Philips heritage companies).

VDL Groep (the parent company of VDL ETG) operates two completely unrelated businesses: VDL Bus & Coach (electric and diesel buses for European city transit systems) and VDL ETG (precision mechatronics for ASML EUV semiconductor scanners). The same Dutch family holding company supplies the bus carrying Amsterdam commuters AND the vacuum vessel that makes the EUV light that prints every advanced AI chip. VDL Bus & Coach has supplied electric buses to cities including Copenhagen, Eindhoven, and Brussels. VDL ETG supplies precision mechatronics to ASML. A strike at VDL Groep's Eindhoven facilities, a management crisis at the family company, or a Dutch labor law change affecting industrial manufacturing would simultaneously affect European city bus fleet delivery and global semiconductor equipment production. European transit authorities and global chip manufacturers share a Dutch family-owned industrial company as a common supplier -- without knowing it.
VDL Groep B.V. ↗Origin2023
VDL ETG (VDL Enabling Technologies Group) traces its origins to Philips Machinefabrieken -- the internal manufacturing arm of Philips NV that produced the precision mechanical equipment used in Philips' own factories. When Philips began supplying components for ASML (which itself started as a Philips-ASM joint venture in 1984), Philips Machinefabrieken was the natural supplier of precision mechatronics. VDL Groep acquired VDL ETG from Philips in 2006 as Philips systematically divested non-core industrial assets. VDL Groep -- a Dutch family conglomerate founded in 1953 by Pieter van der Leegte and still family-controlled -- primarily manufactures buses and coaches (VDL Bus & Coach brand); VDL ETG is a much smaller but strategically important subsidiary. The Dutch family bus company that also makes EUV scanner vacuum vessels is among the most counter-intuitive supply chain configurations in advanced manufacturing: Wim van der Leegte, who inherited VDL Groep and grew it into a Dutch industrial champion, built electric buses for Amsterdam AND precision vacuum chambers for ASML from the same Eindhoven organization.
