Vertiv's Liebert UPS systems and Emerson/Vertiv DC power (rectifier) systems serve both hyperscaler data center backup power AND 5G wireless base station backup power from the same product lines. A 5G macrocell base station requires -48VDC rectifier plant and battery backup (Vertiv DC plant) to maintain wireless coverage through grid outages. A hyperscaler data center requires 3-phase UPS systems (Vertiv Liebert EXL) to protect servers from power interruptions. Both applications use the same Vertiv battery strings, the same charge controller electronics, the same monitoring firmware (Vertiv Trellis). Vertiv Holdings originates from Emerson Electric's data center power and cooling division, Emerson Network Power — itself built through acquisitions of Liebert Corporation (1987, data center precision cooling), Avocent (2007, KVM/data center management), and many smaller companies. Emerson Electric is the St. Louis industrial conglomerate founded in 1890; its venture into data center infrastructure made Emerson Network Power the world's leading provider of critical data center physical infrastructure by the 2000s. In 2016, Emerson Electric sold the Network Power division to private equity firm Platinum Equity for $4 billion, and the renamed Vertiv went public through a SPAC merger in 2020.
