Origin2023
Visionox was founded by researchers from Tsinghua University — China's most prestigious technology institution, analogous to MIT in the US — who had been working on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology since the mid-1990s. The founding team included Professor Deng Qinghua, who had studied OLED technology at Tsinghua's chemistry department, and other researchers. Visionox was created as a technology commercialization vehicle, initially supported by both Tsinghua University and government industrial policy funding that designated OLED display development as a national strategic technology priority. China's national industrial policy explicitly targeted domestic OLED manufacturing capability to reduce dependence on Samsung Display and LG Display, which collectively supplied nearly all OLED panels for Chinese smartphone brands including Huawei, OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi. Visionox received billions of yuan in government-directed investment for its Guzhen, Guangdong and Hebei production lines — a Chinese state-backed academic spinoff competing with South Korea's industrial giants for the display supply chain on which the global smartphone industry depends. The company's progress — gaining qualification for Huawei and OPPO OLED supply — demonstrates China's incremental success in developing domestic alternatives in strategic component markets.
