Vulcan Materials was founded in 1909 in Birmingham, Alabama primarily to supply limestone flux for Birmingham's booming blast furnace steel industry — Alabama limestone was essential for removing silica impurities from iron ore smelting. When the Birmingham steel industry collapsed in the mid-20th century, Vulcan pivoted from metallurgical limestone to construction aggregates (crushed stone for road base and concrete). The same quarrying equipment and logistics infrastructure that had served US Steel and Bethlehem Steel's Alabama operations was redirected to highway construction. Vulcan became the dominant US aggregates producer by acquiring regional quarrying companies through the 1960s-1990s as the Interstate Highway System drove sustained demand. Today Vulcan operates the same basic business model as 1909 — digging limestone and granite out of the ground — but for data center concrete pads, IIJA infrastructure, and residential construction instead of steel mills.
