    Meta (Facebook) developed the Open Compute Project (OCP) in 2011 by open-sourcing the hardware designs for its data center servers, switches, and racks — publishing the full mechanical and electrical specifications for hyperscaler-class server hardware so any manufacturer could build them. Wiwynn became one of the primary commercial manufacturers of OCP-compliant hardware, building OCP server designs for Meta's own AI infrastructure AND selling OCP-standard server products to third-party buyers: regional cloud providers, telecom companies, universities, and national research networks that adopt the open-source Meta hardware design. The same Wiwynn factory that assembles servers running Llama AI for Meta also assembles servers running telecom CDN infrastructure for ISPs who adopted OCP standards, national supercomputer centers in Europe, and regional cloud providers in Southeast Asia — using the same open-source hardware specification that Meta published. Meta's strategic decision to commoditize server hardware (rather than keep proprietary designs) turned Wiwynn into the manufacturer of AI infrastructure for both Meta and Meta's indirect competitors.

    Wiwynn's corporate genealogy is a three-generation spinoff chain from a Taiwanese consumer electronics brand. Acer Inc., the Taiwan consumer PC and notebook brand, spun off its OEM/ODM manufacturing operations as Wistron Corporation in 2001, when Acer decided to separate its branded products from its contract manufacturing business. Wistron grew into a major ODM serving HP, Dell, and Microsoft. Then in 2017, Wistron spun off its hyperscaler/cloud computing server ODM business as Wiwynn Corporation and separately listed it on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE: 6669). Wiwynn's IPO made Wistron's accumulated hyperscaler server expertise into an independently traded pure-play: the world's AI data center infrastructure build-out is being assembled by a company that is the grand-offspring of a Taiwanese consumer PC brand, two corporate generations removed from the laptop market.
