  World Kinect was founded in 1984 as Trans-Tec Services, a New York marine fuel brokerage. It went public via reverse merger, grew through acquisitions into aviation and land fuel, and by 2022 ranked #70 on the Fortune 500 at $39.8B revenue — one of the largest US companies almost no one has heard of, operating entirely in B2B logistics. In 2013, crude oil the company owned was aboard the runaway train that derailed at Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, killing 47 people — with allegations WKC misclassified the crude's volatility. The $110M settlement established definitively that WKC takes physical title to fuel (not merely broker/agent). In June 2023, the company rebranded from World Fuel Services to World Kinect Corporation to signal an energy transition pivot. That pivot failed: in April 2026, following a $247M impairment charge, the company reversed the rebrand and returned to the World Fuel commercial name.
