[NOTE: Avinode sold to CAMP Systems/Hearst ~May 2024] World Kinect owns Avinode Group, the dominant B2B marketplace for private jet charter — the platform operators and brokers worldwide use to quote, price, and book charter flights. Avinode is a pure technology marketplace with no fuel component; it competes with companies like CharterPad and LEON Software in aviation operations software. A fuel distribution logistics company thus owns the primary transaction infrastructure for the global business aviation market, with strategic access to operator schedules, charter pricing data, and aircraft positioning information across the entire business jet ecosystem.

  • Chokepoint2024

World Kinect distributes 17.7 billion gallons of fuel annually ($42.2B revenue in 2024) across 190 countries to 150,000+ customers — yet earns only a $1.03B gross profit, a 2.4% gross margin. This extreme margin compression is structural: the company is a commodity trading intermediary that captures pennies per gallon on enormous volume. Despite its Fortune 500 scale, the entire business model depends on three things it does not own: third-party storage terminals, third-party pipeline access, and cheap credit to finance commodity inventory. The asset-light positioning is both a competitive moat and a structural fragility — any credit tightening, terminal capacity restriction, or commodity price spike that outruns credit lines can cascade into a liquidity crisis.

  • Origin2026

World Kinect was founded in 1984 as Trans-Tec Services, a New York marine fuel brokerage. It went public via reverse merger, grew through acquisitions into aviation and land fuel, and by 2022 ranked #70 on the Fortune 500 at $39.8B revenue — one of the largest US companies almost no one has heard of, operating entirely in B2B logistics. In 2013, crude oil the company owned was aboard the runaway train that derailed at Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, killing 47 people — with allegations WKC misclassified the crude's volatility. The $110M settlement established definitively that WKC takes physical title to fuel (not merely broker/agent). In June 2023, the company rebranded from World Fuel Services to World Kinect Corporation to signal an energy transition pivot. That pivot failed: in April 2026, following a $247M impairment charge, the company reversed the rebrand and returned to the World Fuel commercial name.

  • Capacity2024

World Kinect is an active supplier of aviation fuel and SAF to military customers: UK Ministry of Defence (delivered 4M litres of SAF-blended fuel to the RAF, November 2023–February 2024, then awarded a follow-on 5.15M litre contract), NATO operations, the US Defense Logistics Agency (DLA Energy), and Australian Defence Forces. They supply JP-8, F-34, JP-5/F-44, and STANAG 3149-compliant grades at 8,000+ aviation locations globally. Unlike refinery-based fuel suppliers, WKC's asset-light model means military supply continuity depends entirely on maintaining access to third-party terminal and pipeline infrastructure — there is no owned backup.
