  • Did you know2024

Xinyi Group (through Xinyi Glass Holdings as parent and Xinyi Solar as subsidiary) simultaneously dominates two glass applications that are both central to the energy transition: (1) automotive glass — Xinyi Glass is one of the world's largest automotive windshield and side-glass suppliers, making the glass through which EV drivers view the road; and (2) solar PV cover glass — Xinyi Solar makes the glass protecting solar panels that generate electricity for EVs and buildings. The same Chinese Guangdong float glass group coats the front of your solar panel AND provides the windshield on the EV the panel charges. Xinyi's parent-subsidiary structure across automotive and solar glass makes it uniquely positioned across two green transition supply chains — one providing the physical infrastructure for solar electricity generation and one providing the transparent structural element of the electric vehicle itself.

  • Incident2025

Xinyi Solar's 2024 net profit fell 73.8% YoY as PV glass oversupply collapsed prices. Average selling price fell ~12% while gross margin dropped from 26.8% to 15.8%. Despite this, sales volume grew 9.6% YoY. The overcapacity reflects structural race-to-the-bottom dynamics in Chinese PV glass driven by aggressive capacity build-out — multiple producers paused or deferred expansion. This may reduce long-term investment in non-Chinese solar glass supply.

  • Origin2023

Xinyi Solar Holdings was spun off from Xinyi Glass Holdings (HKEX: 0868) in 2013 — separating the solar-specific glass business from the broader Xinyi Glass group which makes automotive, architectural, and energy-saving glass. The Xinyi Group was founded in 1988 in Jiangmen, Guangdong by Lee Yin Yee — one of China's most successful glass industry entrepreneurs. The group's automotive glass business (windshields and auto glass) preceded its solar glass operations, and the float glass manufacturing expertise developed for automotive and architectural glass was transferred to solar PV glass production as the Chinese solar panel industry grew in the 2000s-2010s. Xinyi Solar's growth to ~34% global PV glass capacity share reflects the same Chinese capacity-led market dominance pattern seen in solar panels, lithium batteries, and other energy transition materials.
