Yunnan Germanium's primary feedstock is an geological anomaly: Yunnan Province coal deposits contain 10-100 times the global average germanium concentration (0.01-0.1% Ge vs. typical 1-5 parts per million in most coal). This anomaly — attributed to germanium enrichment during ancient marine sediment deposition in Yunnan's Permian geological era — makes coal fly ash from Yunnan power plants a viable germanium source that would be uneconomic in most global coal. Yunnan Germanium was established to industrialize this recovery process: burning Yunnan coal for electricity → capturing germanium-enriched fly ash → acid leaching → germanium extraction/purification. The company also recovers germanium from zinc smelter flue dust (germanium co-precipitates with zinc during smelting). Yunnan's coal-to-germanium supply chain means that the fiber optic cable carrying global internet traffic depends partly on the geological composition of ancient Yunnan coal seams.
