Baja California Berry Region (San Quintin Valley)
The San Quintin Valley and coastal Baja California Norte agricultural region is the primary source of US fresh strawberry and raspberry imports during the fall-winter season (October–April). Driscoll's, Naturipe, and other berry marketers source from hundreds of independent grower families in this region. Baja California's mild Pacific coastal climate (fog-moderated temperatures, 45-65°F year-round) produces high-quality berries when California's Central Coast is in its off-season. Labor conditions in San Quintin became a major US news story in 2015 when approximately 80,000 agricultural workers went on strike over wages, housing, and working conditions — the largest agricultural labor action in Mexico in decades. The strike disrupted strawberry shipments to the US for several weeks and drew attention to the labor infrastructure underlying US berry affordability.
