BASF Nunhems HQ and Breeding Station — Haelen, Netherlands

Nunhems headquarters, Haelen, Limburg, Netherlands — the original home of the Nunhems vegetable seed business since 1921. This facility serves as BASF Vegetable Seeds' global headquarters and a primary breeding station for onion, pepper, and tomato. The Haelen site houses Nunhems' core germplasm collection — proprietary breeding lines developed over a century of work — which became part of the $7.2B BASF acquisition in 2018. BASF's integration of Nunhems with the acquired HM.CLAUSE assets created a combined vegetable seed R&D organization of approximately 1,500 scientists. The Haelen site is particularly critical for onion breeding: Nunhems holds an estimated 20-25% of the global commercial onion hybrid seed market.
