Central Arizona Project Canal System (336 miles)
Central Arizona Project (CAP) aqueduct system: 336-mile concrete-lined open canal and tunnel system delivering Colorado River water from Lake Havasu (Havasu Pumping Plant, Parker AZ) uphill across the Sonoran Desert to Phoenix (Mark Wilmer Pumping Plant, Buckeye AZ) and Tucson (Tucson Water delivery point). CAP requires 14 pumping plants lifting water over 2,900 vertical feet total — consuming approximately 2.8 billion kWh/year of electricity, making CAP the single largest electricity customer in Arizona. CAP serves ~5 million people in Maricopa, Pinal, and Pima counties. Construction cost: approximately $4 billion (1973-1993). CAP water has junior priority in Arizona — the last allocation cut in shortage declarations.
