CJ CheilJedang L-Methionine Plant (Kertih, Malaysia)
World's first and only commercial-scale bio-based L-methionine plant; 80,000 MT/year capacity; opened early 2015. CJ uses genetically engineered E. coli K-12 fermenting plant sugars — produces L-methionine (single enantiomer) rather than racemic DL-methionine of chemical synthesis. Arkema co-located a thiochemicals (methyl mercaptan) plant at the same Kertih site as feedstock supplier. Fermentation-derived L-methionine is valued by premium pet food and organic poultry segments seeking non-petrochemical amino acids.
